GAME NOTES: Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament action rolls on with the second quarterfinal-round matchup of the day on Friday, as the fifth-seeded Dayton Flyers take on the fourth-seeded Saint Joseph's Hawks at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
The winner of this contest will advance to the semifinal round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament to face either Saint Louis or La Salle.
Dayton advanced past Fordham in the first round of the A-10 Tournament on Thursday, 87-74. The Flyers come into this quarterfinal clash with Saint Joseph's as one of the hottest teams in the conference, having won four straight games and 10 of their last 11 going back well into the regular season.
Saint Joseph's lost its last two games of the regular season, including a 71-63 defeat at the hands of La Salle on Sunday in the season finale. Those two losses snapped the Hawks' six-game winning streak, and was the first time all season they lost back-to-back conference games.
Dayton leads the all-time series against Saint Joseph's, 19-14. The Hawks got the better of the Flyers back on Feb. 25 with a 79-53 thrashing in Philadelphia.
Dayton exploded offensively in the first half of Thursday's battle with Fordham, netting 50 points on 63 percent shooting from the floor which led to a 50-31 advantage at the intermission. The Flyers never looked back, and although the Rams shaved sic points off Dayton's first-half lead, it wasn't nearly enough to put a scare into the fifth-seeded Flyers. Vee Sanford netted a team-high 23 points in the win, which included a perfect 9-of-9 shooting performance from the floor. Devin Oliver tallied a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Jordan Sibert netted 14 points. Dyshawn Pierre chipped in 12 points to round out the Flyers' double-digit scorers. Sibert and Oliver lead the team in scoring headed into the match with Saint Joseph's, with Sibert netting 12.6 ppg and Oliver checking in at 12.2 ppg. Oliver adds a team-high 7.5 rpg mark to his season resume.
La Salle jumped ahead of Saint Joseph's early in the contest Sunday, and took a 33-23 lead into the intermission. That was plenty for the Explorers, who cruised through the second half en route to the eight-point victory. Langston Galloway scored 27 points to lead the Hawks in the game, which boosted his already team-leading scoring average to an even 17 ppg. Freshman DeAndre Bembry scored 15 points in the game, and Ronald Roberts chipped in 13 with eight rebounds. Halil Kanacevic brought down a team-high 12 boards in the game. Roberts is second on the team with a 14.6 ppg average entering the tournament, and Kanacevic tops the squad in rebounding with 8.3 boards per outing.
Dayton showed off its powerful offense Thursday against a Fordham team that was simply overmatched. The Flyers will need a lot more to keep pace with the Hawks, who won by over 20 points in their earlier meeting this season. Galloway is a critical player in this contest, and if he gets hot early, it will be a long 40 minutes for Dayton.
