GAME NOTES: The Saint Peter's Peacocks aim for their fourth straight win on Monday night, as they clash with the Marist Red Foxes in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the McCann Center.
The Peacocks have bounced back from consecutive defeats against Manhattan and Canisius in conference play earlier this month by capturing three straight victories. The most recent outing took place last Thursday at Rider, with Saint Peter's posting a 77-69 victory over the Broncs.
As for the Red Foxes, a team which is just 4-3 at home in 2013-14, they are currently heading in the opposite direction. Marist opened the campaign with nine straight defeats before putting together a five-game win streak, but now the losses have started to mount once again. On Saturday, the program suffered a 66-56 home loss to those same Rider Broncs.
As far as the all-time series is concerned, the Peacocks are ahead by a single game at the moment, 21-20.
The Peacocks made a total of 19 field goals against Rider, which in most cases would probably spell disaster, but the visitors converted eight of those from 3-point range and then knocked down a sizzling 31-of-35 at the free-throw line in order to steal away the win. Desi Washington tallied 21 points, Marvin Dominique contributed 16 and Trevis Wyche 14 points for a team that turned the ball over just six times.
Shooting a solid 48.2 percent from the field, Dominique leads the Peacocks in scoring entering the week with his 17.9 ppg, followed by Washington with 13.6 ppg as the only other double-digit scorer on the roster. Unfortunately for the Peacocks, they are still one of the weaker offensive teams in the MAAC and in the nation with just 66.2 ppg, but the good news is that the defense has managed to limit the opposition to only 68.2 ppg in order to keep things interesting.
Marist fell behind by double figures 11 minutes into the meeting with the Broncs the last time out and never recovered. The Red Foxes converted just six field goals in the first half and 4-of-9 at the free-throw line, although the team did respond in the second half at the charity stripe (17-of-17), but by then it was too late. Chavaughn Lewis tallied 15 points and Khallid Hart another 11, while Adam Kemp registered a double-double with his 10 points and team-best 11 rebounds.
Playing close to 34 minutes per contest, Lewis leads the program in scoring with 16.8 ppg, but he has made good on only 38.9 percent of his field goal chances and a disappointing 28.9 percent behind the 3-point line to this point as well. Hart (13.4 ppg) and Jay Bowie (10.5 ppg) give the squad a solid presence out on the perimeter, while Kemp (8.1 ppg) is the key figure in the paint with a team-best 7.6 rpg.
Both of these clubs are having a tough time establishing themselves this season, but at least for the time being it seems as though the Peacocks have put the right pieces together and that should be enough to get them through tonight's action.
