GAME NOTES: The Fordham Rams will try to fix a five-game losing streak, but will have to go through the 24th-ranked Saint Louis Billikens in Atlantic 10 action in order to end the skid at Chaifetz Arena.
In a tough Atlantic 10 Conference this season, Fordham has lost five in a row - three to conference opponents. The Rams were downed by Dayton, 80-68, in the team's last outing Wednesday.
Saint Louis, on the other hand, has been soaring in the team's last 10 games, winning all 10 and moving into the nation's Top 25. The Billikens defeated St. Bonaventure, 66-60, in their most recent contest.
Saint Louis has jumped out to an early series lead and has continued to improve upon it, extending it to 8-1. This is the first and only time these two programs will meet during the regular season.
Fordham got off a barrage of shots against Dayton Wednesday, but didn't connect on nearly as many as the team would've cared for. The Flyers, however, hit 57 percent of their shots, extinguishing the Rams, 80-68. Branden Frazier netted a game-high 20 points for Fordham on 4-of-14 shooting from the floor. Frazier hit 12-of-13 from the free-throw line in the loss. Ryan Rhoomes netted 15 points and grabbed a team-best 15 rebounds for the double-double, while Jon Severe added 13 points. The Rams shot 34.5 percent from the floor.
Severe and Frazier have proven to be one of the more dynamic scoring duos this season for Fordham, although the Rams haven't translated their scoring into wins. Severe nets 20.9 ppg through the team's first 16 games played, while Frazier scores 19 ppg. Rhoomes pulls down a team-high 8 rpg and leads the team with 16 blocked shots. The Rams average 76.6 ppg.
Saint Louis held a slim one-point lead at the half against St. Bonaventure, 28-27, then picked things up a bit in the second half to secure the six-point win. Dwayne Evans netted a team-high 18 points for the Billikens, adding six rebounds to his stat line. Jordair Jett chipped in 15 points, and Rob Loe grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. Saint Louis shot 63.2 percent from the floor in the second half to make up for the first-frame's 32.4 percent.
Evans and Jett are the top two scorers this season for Saint Louis, and the only two players on the team to net double-digit point averages. Evans contributes 15.2 ppg, while Jett scores 11.9 ppg for the Billikens, who as a team average 70.1 ppg. Evans is tied for the team lead in rebounding, grabbing 6.2 rpg with Grandy Glaze. Saint Louis has prided itself on defense, holding opponents to 57.8 ppg this year.
Fordham's recent decline is cause for concern, since its top scorers haven't declined themselves. Saint Louis is playing as well as any team in the A-10, and with a crushing defense, should take this one at home.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Saint Louis 77, Fordham 69
