GAME NOTES: With their sights set on a five-game winning streak, the Akron Zips will tangle with the Detroit Titans in non-conference play at James A. Rhodes Arena.

Detroit is continuing a three-game road trip. The Titans came up just short in the first leg of their journey. They battled NC State in Raleigh but fell in an 82-79 decision. The loss was the second in the last three games for Detroit, which ends the trip on Sunday against Bowling Green.

As for Akron, the last four contests have all ended in victories. The most recent was a 74-64 triumph at home over Oral Roberts. The Zips are a perfect 3-0 on their home floor. However up next they will travel to Honolulu to take part in the Diamond Head Classic.

A year ago Detroit earned an 80-73 home victory over Akron. The win evened the all-time series at four games apiece.

Jarod Williams missed a final 3-point attempt as the buzzer sounded to allow NC State to close out the victory over Detroit. Williams was one of four players to score in double figures for the Titans. Juwan Howard Jr. was the leading scorer with 24 points.

Howard (17.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg) has enjoyed a productive year. However, it has not been an efficient one. The 6-foot-6 forward is connecting on only 38.6 percent of his shots from the floor, although he has scored in double figures in all but one game. Howard's partner is Evan Bruinsma (12.5 ppg, 7.8 rpg), who provides healthy numbers in scoring and on the boards. Bruinsma finished with 16 points and six rebounds against NC State. Carlton Brundidge (9.4 ppg) is the top scoring threat in the backcourt. As a team the Titans are scoring 76 points per game despite hitting on just 41 percent of their attempts from the floor.

Akron got a great deal from its bench to top Oral Roberts. Led by 19 points from Quincy Diggs, the Zips enjoyed a 42-12 edge in points from reserves. They also had a sizable scoring advantage from beyond the arc (18-3).

Diggs (13.2 ppg) doesn't always make plays off the bench, as he has started in half of Akron's games. The 6-foot-6 forward is also second on the team in minutes played (26.3 pg). Demetrius Treadwell (13.3 ppg, 8 rpg) leads the team in points, rebounds, blocks and minutes played. In fact no other player on the roster is getting more than 27 minutes on the court per game. Treadwell finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds against Oral Roberts. The effort was his second double-double of the season. Nick Harney (10 ppg) provides additional scoring punch, including his 11-point showing last time out.

The duel between Diggs and Treadwell and Howard and Bruinsma should make this an interesting game to watch. In the end the Zips' homecourt edge should win out.
