GAME NOTES: The South Alabama Jaguars and UT-Arlington Mavericks tip off in the regular-season finale for both Sun Belt Conference teams at the Mitchell Center on Saturday night.
The Mavericks, behind the Sun Belt's leading scorer Reger Dowell, are vying for conference tournament seeding.
Arlington currently sits in a tie with Arkansas-Little Rock for fifth in the Sun Belt with a 9-8 record. However, with a win here and some help, the Mavericks could jump to the fourth seed. Little Rock is facing ULM on Saturday night.
Dowell will likely take home the conference's scoring crown. He enters play with 20.5 ppg, which is 1.1 ppg better than the second-best scorer, Louisiana's Elfrid Payton.
Dowell scored 19 points in Thursday's 87-86 double-overtime win against Troy. However, it was Brandon Edwards' career-best 33 points that led the way for Mavericks, who have won three of four.
The Jaguars have already been eliminated from postseason play. The top eight teams qualify for the Sun Belt Tournament, leaving the bottom two out. South Alabama could finish in a tie with eighth place Troy, but since they split the season series, the Trojans hold the tiebreaker as they have the better win percentage against the top-seeded team Georgia State. Troy is the only team to beat Georgia State in conference play this season. The Trojans would also have to lose to last-place Texas State to even force the tiebreaker.
South Alabama most recently beat Texas State, 63-53, on Thursday night. Augustine Rubit tallied a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Jaguars, who improved to 10-20 overall and 4-13 in the Sun Belt. Antoine Allen added 13 points for South Alabama, which ended a two-game losing streak
Rubit's 17 ppg leads the Jaguars who score just over 68 ppg this season.
These two schools met back on Jan. 25 with the Maverick's coming away with the win. Dowell scored 21 points and Lonnie McClanahan poured in 19 points, as Arlington outlasted South Alabama, 73-65. Brandon Edwards posted a double- double with 17 points and 11 rebounds for Arlington, which defeated the Jaguars for the first time in seven meetings. Allen led the way for South Alabama with 18 points.
Expect much of the same in this contest. Even though South Alabama is at home, with not much to play for, it's hard to see the Jaguars getting up for this one.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Texas-Arlington 74, South Alabama 64
