GAME NOTES: The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are still in search of their first conference victory as they host the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in an Atlantic Coast Conference clash at the McCamish Pavilion on Saturday.
Wake Forest is fresh off an exciting 86-84 upset of 18th-ranked NC State on Tuesday in which the team shot 59.4 percent from the field in the second half after shooting just 38.7 percent in the first. It was the squad's sixth win in nine games and improved Wake to 10-8 and evened its league ledger to 3-3.
The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 79-63 loss at North Carolina. The setback marked the fifth straight for Tech, coming off a streak of six straight wins (all at home). Powered by an 8-2 record at home, the young Yellow Jackets are 10-7 on the season.
Wake Forest leads the all-time series 37-36. Georgia Tech took the last meeting 69-62 at the Philips Arena last March.
Devin Thomas played outstanding in the second half comeback win over NC State. Thomas was 10-of-13 from the field finishing with 25 points, 14 rebounds, and four assists, while managing four blocks and three steals on the defensive end. Travis McKie (16 points, eight rebounds), Codi Miller-McIntyre (15 points), and Arnaud William Adala Moto (10 rebounds) all added significant performances. McKie leads the team in scoring this year, posting 15.3 ppg, with 8.2 rpg. C.J. Harris adds 14.6 ppg on 48.5 percent shooting from the field and 44.1 percent shooting from 3-point range. The team as a whole averages 68.4 ppg, while opponents score 68.7 ppg.
Kammeon Holsey was 8-of-13 from the field with 18 points and nine rebounds before fouling out with 1:17 left against the Tar Heels. Freshman Chris Bolden added 10 points but shot just 5-of-14 and was 0-of-3 from beyond the arc. Freshman Marcus Georges-Hunt is the only player for Georgia Tech averaging in double figures, scoring with 10.4 ppg. Robert Carter Jr. just misses double- digit scoring with 9.9 ppg and 7.0 rpg. Mfon Udofia adds 9.2 ppg, while Holsey tallies 9.2 and 5.0 rpg. The Yellow Jackets score 64.9 ppg but are a defensive team as they hold opponents to 59.4 ppg (39th in nation) and 37.7 percent shooting from the field (19th in nation).
Tech started the year 8-0 in their building but since then have dropped two straight in conference play. The Yellow Jackets should get back on track tonight and with good play on the defensive end of the ball, earn their first ACC win in the process.
