NCAA Game Summary - Minnesota vs. Chaminade

(Wednesday, November 27th)

Final Score: Minnesota 83, Chaminade 68

Maui, HI (SportsNetwork.com) - DeAndre Mathieu scored 17 points and Minnesota put together a big second-half run to rally for an 83-68 decision over Chaminade in the seventh place game of the Maui Invitational.

Malik Smith added 16 points off the bench for the Golden Gophers (6-2), who outscored the host Silverswords by a 20-5 margin over a span of five-plus minutes to battle back from a 59-51 deficit midway through the second half.

The surge enabled Minnesota to avoid a winless showing for the event. The Golden Gophers were dealt losses by eighth-ranked Syracuse and Arkansas after entering the tournament having won five straight under first-year coach Richard Pitino.

Chaminade (2-3) led by as many as nine in the second half after taking a 42-37 edge into intermission. It was an eight-point differential with under 10 minutes to go before the Gophers began to assume control, with baskets from Maurice Walker on consecutive possessions igniting Minnesota's extended flurry.

Back-to-back layups from Mathieu and Maverick Ahanmisi brought the Gophers within 64-62 with 7:35 left, and Andre Hollins knocked down a 3-pointer a minute later to send Minnesota ahead.

Another trey by Hollins, this one with 3:10 remaining, extended Minnesota's advantage to 74-66. The Silverswords never got closer than six points the rest of the way.

Lee Bailey paced Chaminade with 18 points, with Frankie Eteuati amassing 13 points, nine rebounds and four blocks in the loss.
