St. Thomas, VI (SportsNetwork.com) - Morgan State captured its first victory of the season by defeating Marist, 74-67, in overtime in the seventh place game of the Paradise Jam tournament.
The Bears (1-6) were led by Ian Chiles, who scored a career-high 25 points to go along with nine rebounds and seven blocks. Justin Black added 19 points while snagging nine rebounds, and Cedric Blossom shot a perfect 5-of-5 from the field and went 6-of-6 from the free throw line to finish with 16 points in the contest.
The game was knotted 62-62 at the end of regulation thanks to a pair of free throws by Blossom with 1:12 remaining in the second half.
In overtime, the Bears capitalized on a 3-pointer made by Blake Bozeman with the shot clock expiring to take a 71-64 lead with 36 seconds remaining. After a 3-point play converted by Marist's Chavaughn Lewis cut the score to four, Morgan State managed to secure the victory by making 3-of-4 shots from the charity stripe the rest of the way.
The Bears' defense held the Red Foxes to only one field goal and caused three turnovers during the overtime session.
Marist (0-7) was led by Jay Bowie, who shot 8-of-11 from the field to finish with a team high 22 points. Five of his eight made field goals came from beyond the arc.
Also scoring in double-digits for the Red Foxes were Lewis (15), Adam Kemp (12) and Khallid Hart (10).
