Portland, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - Gary Winston scored 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor as the Portland State Vikings narrowly defeated the University of North Dakota, 70-68, in Big Sky Conference play at the Stott Center.
DaShaun Wiggins chipped in 16 points for Portland State (11-8, 6-4 Big Sky), and Kyle Richardson added 11 with six rebounds. The Vikings have won four consecutive games.
Jamal Webb hit a layup with 43 seconds remaining in regulation that put North Dakota (9-11, 6-4) down by two points, but UND couldn't complete the comeback. Troy Huff netted 20 points with seven rebounds, while Webb and Quinton Hooker each tallied 11 points. The loss snaps a four-game North Dakota win streak.
Portland State came out of the gates hot, shooting 55 percent in the first half, but missed all three of its 3-point attempts. The Vikings went into the half trailing UND, 34-27, thanks to 46.2 percent shooting for North Dakota, including 5-of-10 from 3-point distance.
The Vikings improved on their shooting in the second frame, hitting 66.7 percent of their field goal attempts, and went a perfect 8-of-8 from the free- throw line. North Dakota hit 46.7 percent from the floor, and was outscored 43-34 in the period by the Vikings.
Portland State had the advantage in points in the paint, 38-34, and from the free-throw line, 13-8.
