Riverside, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Anthony Ireland scored 16 points as the Loyola Marymount Lions held off UC Riverside to post a 73-69 victory over the Highlanders in non-league play at SRC Arena.
Ireland connected on 6-of-14 shots and handed out three assists for Loyola Marymount (6-2). Gabe Levin fished with a double-double (13 points, 14 rebounds) and Evan Payne chipped in 12 points.
Taylor Johns scored 22 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and also blocked three shots to lead UC Riverside (2-4). Chris Patton tacked on 15 points.
With both teams shooting below 40 percent from the field in the first half, Loyola Marymount found some success from the free-throw line to take a 39-31 lead at the break. The Lions hit 15-of-20 attempts from the charity stripe while UC Riverside had only five points at the foul line.
The Highlanders heated up to 47.1 percent shooting in the second period. Though they never led in the frame, the Highlanders did cut their deficit to a single point on four occasions. The Lions managed to escape with the win by hitting 41.4 percent from the floor, including 4-of-7 attempts from beyond the arc.
UC Riverside outscored Loyola Marymount, 44-24, in the paint. The Lions had a 23-18 advantage in second chance points.
