(Saturday, November 9)
Final Score: Indiana State 82, Ball State 73
Terre Haute, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Dawon Cummings buried 6-of-8 3-pointers and scored 21 points to help lift the Indiana State Sycamores to an 82-73 win over the Ball State Cardinals in the season-opener for both teams inside the Hulman Center.
Jake Odum chipped in with 17 points and seven assists for the Sycamores (1-0). Manny Arop was next in line with 14 points, while Justin Gant finished with 11.
The Cardinals (0-1) lost the head coaching debut of James Whitford, despite a game-high 23 points from Jesse Berry and another 17 from backcourt mate Zavier Turner.
The Sycamores jumped out to a 43-34 halftime lead thanks in large part to Cummings, who scored 15 points in 11 minutes behind a 5-of-6 effort from the perimeter in the opening frame.
Indiana State led by as many as 15 points four minutes into the second half. The Cardinals rallied to cut the deficit to six with less than 10 minutes to play, but they were unable to draw any closer the rest of the way.
Both teams shot better than 50 percent from the floor, but the Sycamores were a bit more efficient from the 3-point line (.560) and the free-throw line (.850).
