NCAA Game Summary - Pittsburgh vs. Cincinnati

(Tuesday, December 17)

Final Score: Cincinnati 44, Pittsburgh 43

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Titus Rubles hit the game-winning shot off an offensive rebound with 4.2 seconds to play to give the Cincinnati Bearcats a 44-43 victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.

Rubles only tallied six points in the game for the Bearcats (8-2), but in a low-scoring contest in which both teams struggled to hit their shots, every basket was needed. The leading scorer for the Bearcats was Justin Jackson, who had 12 points to go along with nine rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.

The Panthers (10-1) suffered their first loss of the season. Talib Zanna was their high scorer with 12 points, and Lamar Patterson added 11. The Panthers were guilty of only nine fouls in the game, leading to a mere three free throws for Cincinnati, yet they attempted 29 foul shots themselves, making 19 of them (.655).

The first half ended in a 20-20 tie, with no team having more than a five- point lead, and both endured lengthy scoring droughts. The Panthers shot just 28.6 percent from the field, compared to 35.7 percent for the Bearcats.

Not much changed in the second half. The Panthers managed to hit 11 free throws over a 13:43 second span in which they didn't convert a single field goal. Cameron Wright finally hit a shot with 1:07 left in regulation to give Pitt a 43-42 lead, but that would be its last points of the contest as Patterson missed a pair of foul shots with 21 seconds remaining, just prior to Rubles' final conversion.

With the victory, the Bearcats took a 10-9 lead in the all-time series between the former Big East Conference rivals.
