South Bend, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Eric Atkins dropped a game-high 24 points, including the overtime game-winner, as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish pulled out a victory over the Boston College Eagles, 76-73, in Atlantic Coast Conference play at the Joyce Center.
Atkins shot 9-of-17 from the field for the Fighting Irish (12-10, 3-6 ACC), who returned to form after losing three straight games. Pat Connaughton netted 17 points, while Zach Auguste and V.J. Beachem each added 10.
Ryan Anderson logged 21 points for the Eagles (6-15, 2-6), who have lost four of their last five. Lonnie Jackson and Joe Rahon contributed 15 and 13 points, respectively.
The Irish struggled somewhat in the opening half, where they shot 37.5 percent from the field. The Eagles, at 48 percent, took a 29-26 lead into halftime.
In the second half the Eagles shot 52.9 percent from the floor, but the Irish battled back at 50 percent, sinking 16 field goals to just nine by the visitors. With 0.7 seconds left on the clock, Atkins was fouled and sent to the free-throw line, where he sank the first shot and missed the second, leaving the teams knotted at 66-66 and on their way to overtime.
With 35 seconds left in the extra session, Anderson hit a pair of shots at the charity stripe to knot the game at 73. On their ensuing possession, the Irish used the entire shot clock and Atkins got off the winning 3-pointer with two seconds to play.
Despite leading by no more than four points in the game, Notre Dame outscored its opponent 32-26 in the paint and 17-7 on second-chance points.
