Omaha, NE (Sports Network) - Doug McDermott scored a season-high 41 points to lead the Creighton Bluejays to a 91-80 win over the Wichita State Shockers and clinch the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title at CenturyLink Center Omaha.
McDermott shot 15-of-18 from the field and 5-of-8 from behind the arc en route to the second-highest scoring output of his career. Grant Gibbs and Austin Chatman added 12 points apiece and 14 assists between them for Creighton (24-7, 13-5 MVC).
Demetric Williams had 18 points and six assists for Wichita State (24-7, 12-6), which had its five-game winning streak come to an end. Carl Hall and Tekele Cotton each poured in 15 points and Cleanthony Early added 11 points.
McDermott got off to a terrific start with 12 points by the second media timeout as Creighton held a 15-8 edge early on. He finished the first half with 18 points on 7-of-7 from the floor. The Bluejays ended the period on a 7-2 run and led 36-31 at halftime.
The home team led just 55-52 at the 11:46 mark after Malcolm Armstead nailed a 3-pointer for Wichita State. Creighton then ran off 14 of the next 16 points to regain control. The Bluejays shot 71.4 percent from the floor and 7-of-7 from the foul line in the second half.
Creighton took care of business in front of the second largest crowd in CenturyLink Center Omaha history, and it won its first outright MVC regular season title since the 2000-01 season.
