Akron, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by 25 points and 10 rebounds from Demetrius Treadwell, the Akron Zips downed the Northern Illinois Huskies, 62-54, in a Mid-American Conference clash at James A. Rhodes Arena.
For the Zips (17-8, 9-3 MAC), Nyles Evans, Quincy Diggs and Jake Kretzer chipped in with nine points each.
Jordan Threloff led the Huskies (11-13, 5-7) with 14 points. Aaric Armstead added 13 points, Travon Baker scored 10 and Darrell Bowie pulled down 10 rebounds and recorded four steals in the loss.
Akron was hot from the field in the first half, connecting on 52.9 percent of its shots, including 2-of-7 from 3-point range. Trailing by six, 23-17, with under five minutes to play, the Zips finished the half on an 11-4 run to take a 28-27 lead into halftime. NIU shot just 40.7 percent from the floor in the half, but did knock down 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.
After the intermission, the Huskies continued to struggle from the field, shooting just 30.8 percent and coming up empty on all six of their 3-point tries in the half. Akron was little better, making 41.4 percent of its field goal tries, including just 2-of-11 from beyond the arc. The Zips never trailed in the second half, going ahead by as many as 10 points, as they secured the win.
The Zips had the edge on the glass, outrebounding the Huskies 36-33. In addition to their troubles in the field, the Huskies had difficulty shooting from the free-throw line as well, finishing the night just 12-of-21 from the charity stripe.
