NCAA Game Summary - Florida Gulf Coast at South Florida
(Tuesday, December 17)
Final Score: South Florida 68, Florida Gulf Coast 66 (2OT)
Tampa, Florida (SportsNetwork.com) - Victor Rudd scored seven of his team-high 23 points in the second overtime, as the South Florida Bulls slipped past the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast, 68-66, at USF Sun Dome.
The Bulls (7-2) won their first game in the Las Vegas Classic. Rudd also contributed a club-best 14 rebounds. The rest of the Bulls' starting frontcourt produced as well, with John Eqbunu scoring 12 points and grabbing seven rebounds, and Chris Perry tallying 10 points and nine boards.
Bernard Thompson played all 50 minutes for the Eagles (5-5), and scored a Division I program-record 32 points, hitting half of his 12 3-point attempts. Nate Hicks went scoreless, but held down the interior for the Eagles as he logged a program-record 19 rebounds and five blocked shots. Chase Fieler had a double-double consisting of 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Brett Comer scored 17.
It was a lackluster first half for both teams, but the Bulls took a 23-21 lead into the break by narrowly outshooting the Eagles 33.3 percent to 32 percent.
The scoring picked up in the second half but neither team could gain a substantial advantage. Thompson tied the game for the Eagles with 29 seconds remaining on a jump shot, and a Collins layup attempt for the Bulls with one second remaining fell short for a 55-55 tie at the end of regulation.
Each team only scored a basket in the initial overtime. With Perry making a layup with 36 seconds left for the Bulls to once again knot the game. Then, in the second overtime, Rudd missed three-of-four free throws with under 20 seconds remaining to leave the door open for the Eagles.
FGCU nearly made them pay, as the game almost reached a third extra session, but the officials ruled a successful tip-in, which was converted off a full- court inbounds pass, was actually a catch-and-shoot. NCAA rules state that at least .4 need to be on the clock for there to be enough time for a catch-and- shoot, so the basket did not count.
