Fairfax, VA (Sports Network) - Sherrod Wright scored a game-high 29 points as the George Mason Patriots defeated the Houston Cougars in overtime, 88-84, in the College Basketball Invitational at the Patriot Center.
Patrick Holloway and Jonathan Arledge both added 11 points for the Patriots, (20-14), the latter capturing nine rebounds, while Bryon Allen filled out his stat line with 10 points, nine assists and eight boards for the hosts as well.
The Cougars (20-13) were paced by TaShawn Thomas who recorded a huge double- double with 24 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, followed by Joseph Young and Danuel House with 21 and 13 points, respectively.
George Mason opened the meeting on a 17-0 run and appeared poised to blow out the Cougars, yet even with Houston shooting only 1-of-8 behind the 3-point line in the first half, the visitors trailed by just seven points at the break, 43-36.
In the second half the Cougars continued their comeback bid by shooting 50 percent from the floor, but still the squad needed a dunk by Thomas with just 10 seconds remaining in regulation to knot the score at 77-77 and send the meeting into overtime.
In the extra session, the Patriot began with a 7-2 scoring run and used that to slip by with the four-point decision.
A major difference in the game took place on the perimeter where Houston shot only 4-of-17, compared to the Patriots who made good on 11-of-22 attempts behind the 3-point line.
With the victory George Mason now heads to the semifinals of the tournament on Wednesday against an opponent to be determined.
Making news off the court on Monday as well, the Patriots announced that they have set a July 1, 2013 date for when they will be leaving the Colonial Athletic Association and joining the Atlantic 10.
