Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - John Schoof finished with 16 points to lead the second-seeded American University Eagles to a 59-50 victory over the seventh-seeded Colgate Raiders in Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal action at Bender Arena.
Tony Wroblicky posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, adding five assists for the Eagles (18-12), who move on the semifinal round where they will host the third-seeded Holy Cross Crusaders on Saturday evening. Darius Gardner chipped in with 12 points in the victory.
For the Raiders (13-18), Murphy Burnatowski led the way with 15 points, while Austin Tillotson and Damo Sherman-Newsome each finished with 10 points.
American shot 46.2 percent from the field in the first half, including 2-of-8 from 3-point range. Trailing 7-6 early in the game, the Eagles used a 18-0 run to build a double-digit lead, as they went into halftime leading 30-15. Colgate struggled from the field in the opening period, making a woeful 29.2 percent of it field goal tries and missing all seven of its 3-point attempts.
After the break, the Eagles continued to shoot the ball well, connecting on 50 percent of their attempts from the field. The Raiders also improved to 50 percent shooting from the field but could get no closer to the Eagles than seven points down the stretch, as the Eagles cruised to victory and continued their postseason run.
American had the edge on the glass, outrebounding Colgate 34-27. The Eagles finished the night with a 14-9 scoring advantage at the free-throw line, and a 13-0 edge in fast break points.
