GAME NOTES: The Eastern Kentucky Colonels have won three consecutive games, and will seek a fourth as they battle the Morehead State Eagles in an Ohio Valley Conference tilt at McBrayer Arena.
Morehead State has been on a roller coaster ride lately, having won four of the team's last six games with losses sprinkled in between. The Eagles are coming off a 65-54 victory over Jacksonville State last Saturday, which boosted them to 6-3 in the OVC, a game and a half behind Belmont for the East Division lead.
Eastern Kentucky has won three in a row and seven of its last eight games. The Colonels are just a half-game ahead of Morehead State in the OVC East at 7-3 in the conference. EKU is coming off a 74-63 victory over Chattanooga Tuesday.
The Colonels have a pretty firm grip on the all-time lead in the series, 105-75, which includes a 58-28 advantage in Richmond. EKU has won three in a row against the Eagles, including a 76-65 victory earlier this season.
Morehead State held a 40-21 advantage in rebounding to help freeze out Jacksonville State in the Eagles' last outing. Angelo Warner netted a team- high 14 points for Morehead State, while both Billy Reader and Greg Dotson tallied 10 points in the win. Chad Posthumus grabbed 12 rebounds in the game for the Eagles, who shot 47.8 percent from the floor in the game.
Warner is the team's top scorer this season, averaging a healthy 17 ppg on 45 percent shooting from the floor. His 76 assists on the year is second only to Kareem Storey's 121 total assists. Brent Arrington, who netted just four points in the win over Jacksonville State, is second on the team in scoring at 12 ppg. Posthumus leads the team in rebounding with an 11.5 rpg average to go along with his 10.1 ppg mark.
Eastern Kentucky was able to down Chattanooga by forcing the Mocs to commit a season-high 24 turnovers Tuesday night. A strong first half for EKU put the Colonels up 42-36 at the intermission, and they kept a distance in the second half. Glenn Cosey tallied a team-best 19 points in the victory, followed by Corey Walden's 16. Marcus Lewis netted 13 and Orlando Williams added 10 points in the win.
Cosey has been a scoring spark plug for Eastern Kentucky this season, netting 19.1 ppg on 42.4 percent shooting from the field, including 41.8 percent from 3-point range. His 104 assists is a team best, and 31 steals is third on the squad. Walden checks in at second in scoring with 13.3 ppg, while Lewis comes in at third with 11.1 ppg. Eric Stutz is the team's leading rebounder at 4.6 rpg.
Eastern Kentucky's drive toward the top spot in the OVC East Division likely won't be slowing down anytime soon, as long as the three top scorers are in action. Morehead State has been playing well too, but might not be able to crack EKU's strong scoring defense.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Eastern Kentucky 80, Morehead State 73
