Clarke and Butler rout Duquesne
Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Rotnei Clarke led three Butler players in double-figures with 16 points and four 3-pointers, as the No. 15 Bulldogs eased to a 68-49 victory over Duquesne on Tuesday at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Khyle Marshall had 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting for the Bulldogs (22-5, 9-3 A-10), who won their second straight following the team's first home loss of the season on Feb. 13 versus Charlotte. Kellen Dunham donated 11 points and Andrew Smith scored eight and grabbed 10 rebounds in the victory.
Freshman Derrick Colter registered 11 points for the Dukes (8-18, 1-11), who have dropped two straight and 13 of their last 14 games overall.
Colter's 3-pointer just nine minutes into the contest brought the visitors within 15-12. The Bulldogs, though, responded with a 13-5 surge -- which Clarke kicked off with his own 5-0 run with a trey and jumper -- to give the team a 28-17 edge with 4 1/2 minutes left in the half.
Andrew Smith's right wing triple with under one minute remaining made it 36-20 before Mamadou Datt closed the half with a monster dunk to cut the Dukes' deficit to 14 points.
To start the second half, Marshall extended the advantage to 47-27 on a back door lay-in a little over five minutes in, as the Bulldogs exploited Duquesne's 2-3 zone defense and started to take control of the contest for good. Marshall accounted for nine points alone during the span.
The Bulldogs continued to keep the pressure on as Clarke's 3-pointer made it 57-35 with 9:23 remaining. Jeremiah Jones brought the Dukes within 15 points with just under four minutes to play, but that's the closest the visitors would get.
It was the first meeting between the two schools since both were members of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference during the 1992-93 season ... Butler is 13-1 at home this season ... With the victory, Butler matched its win total from last season ... Jones was Duquesne's next leading scorer with nine points.
