Wall sets record as Kentucky moves to 14-0
Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - DeMarcus Cousins posted a double-double with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 12 rebounds, as third-ranked Kentucky clobbered an inferior Hartford squad, 104-61, at Rupp Arena.
Freshman point guard John Wall set a Kentucky single-game record with 16 assists, breaking the mark of 15 previously set by Travis Ford in 1993.
Darnell Dodson shot 6-of-10 from beyond the arc en route to a 19-point effort for the Wildcats (14-0), who received 16 points and five assists from Darius Miller. Patrick Patterson and Daniel Orton contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the win.
"The reason we shoot such a high percentage is because we had so many easy plays," said Kentucky head coach John Calipari. "My thing is to get on the guys to just make easy plays. Don't try to make hero plays. Don't try to throw look-away passes if you don't have to. Throw it to the guy where he can handle it and make a basket."
Joe Zeglinski scored 19 points and Milton Burton added 18 for the Hawks (2-10), who have dropped eight in a row. Morgan Sabia donated 16 points and six rebounds in defeat.
"I think like everybody else, I'm very impressed with John Wall," said Hartford head coach Dan Leibovitz. "It's not just his visibility, which speaks for itself, but I just like the way he carries himself. He seems to be a good teammate, he seems to be someone who is respectful of referees, respectful of the game, and obviously I think he has a bright future here and beyond."
Kentucky scored the game's first eight points, and led 23-8 after Dodson nailed a three-pointer and Orton hit a jumper. Sabia knocked down a trey to pull the Hawks within 28-18 with nine minutes left in the first half, but Kentucky closed out the frame on a 29-13 run to take a 57-31 advantage into the break.
The Wildcats began the second half on a 14-0 surge and coasted to the lopsided victory.
