Suarez Navarro, Bouchard win; Stosur ousted in Portugal

Oeiras, Portugal (SportsNetwork.com) - Top seeds Carla Suarez Navarro and Eugenie Bouchard notched first-round wins, while former U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur came up a loser Tuesday at the $250,000 Portugal Open, clay court tune-up for the French Open.

The reigning two-time runner-up Suarez Navarro rolled past Russian qualifier Alla Kudryavtseva 6-1, 6-2, while the Canadian Bouchard blitzed Russia's Alisa Kleybanova 6-4, 6-1.

Swiss qualifier Timea Bacsinszky surprised the third-seeded Aussie Stosur 6-4, 6-0 on Day 2. The struggling Stosur has now lost four straight and eight of her last 12 matches.

Four other seeds reached the second round, as No. 4 Italian Roberta Vinci got past Romanian Alexandra Cadantu 6-2, 4-6, 6-1; No. 5 Estonian Kaia Kanepi mauled Austrian Yvonne Meusburger 6-2, 6-1; No. 7 Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova drilled Chinese Zhang Shuai 6-4, 6-0; and No. 8 Russian Elena Vesnina vaulted past French qualifier Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 6-1. Kanepi captured this event two years ago.

Last week's surprise Marrakech titlist Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, of Spain, stayed hot with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Chinese Peng Shuai.

Additional opening-round wins came for Romanian qualifier Irina-Camelia Begu, Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova and Slovenian Polona Hercog. Zahlavova Strycova overcame last week's Marrakech runner-up Romina Oprandi, of Switzerland, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

On Wednesday, the Spanish Suarez Navarro will meet Zahlavova Strycova and Bouchard will encounter Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova.

Suarez Navarro lost to Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in last year's Oeiras finale.

This week's titlist will pocket $48,000.
