Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Memphis Tigers scored 17 points in the final five minutes to pull away for a 23-10 victory over the South Florida Bulls in an American Athletic Conference duel at Raymond James Stadium.
Brandon Hayes rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries for Memphis (3-6, 1-4 AAC), which earned its first win in league play. Paxton Lynch threw for just 59 yards and was also intercepted once while completing 6-of-13 pass attempts.
Mike White threw for 198 yards and a touchdown on 18-of-33 passing but was also intercepted four times for South Florida (2-7, 2-3). Andre Davis brought in seven passes for 110 yards and a score and Marcus Shaw added 57 yards on 11 carries.
A quiet first half ended with the Tigers leading, 6-0, thanks to a pair of field goals from Jake Elliott. The first was from 19 yards out and the second was a 56-yard effort.
Marvin Kloss finally got South Florida on the scoreboard with a 28-yard field goal early in the third quarter.
The Tigers erupted at the end of the fourth quarter as Brandon Hayes scored on a five-yard touchdown run, Elliott nailed a 34-yard field goal and Bobby McCain returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown.
Davis hauled in a 31-yard touchdown pass from White with less than a minute remaining but it was not nearly enough.
Memphis forced five turnovers and held South Florida to just 325 total yards. The Tigers had only 242 yards of total offense themselves.
