Ypsilanti, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Behind a career-best performance by quarterback Tyler Tettleton, the Ohio University Bobcats pulled away late from the Eastern Michigan Eagles to earn a 56-28 victory in Mid-American Conference action at Rynearson Stadium.
Tettleton was 23-of-30 for 375 yards with four touchdowns and one interceptions for Ohio (5-2, 2-1 MAC). Donte Foster had a career-high 11 receptions for 143 yards and a touchdown, while Chase Cochran (three receptions, 138 yards, TD) also had a big day receiving. Beau Blankenship finished with 62 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries.
The loss for EMU (1-6, 0-3) came just a day after junior wide receiver Demarius Reed was found shot to death in his off-campus apartment building. Bronson Hill turned 23 carries into 257 yards, the third-best rushing effort in school history. Tyler Benz was 12-of-22 passing for 151 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Benz's top target was Tyreese Russell, who caught three balls for 76 yards and a score.
EMU began the emotional contest with a bang, as Tyler Allen returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for the touchdown to give the Eagles an early lead.
Ohio responded with three straight touchdown drives. Tettleton tied the game up at the 12:31 mark of the opening quarter with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Mario Dovell, then he gave the Bobcats the lead less than four minutes later after he hooked up with Matt Waters on a four-yard score. Blankenship added an eight-yard rushing touchdown later in the frame to give Ohio a 21-7 lead.
The Eagles stopped the bleeding early in the second quarter when Benz connected with Dustin Creel on a 14-yard touchdown pass. Ohio had an opportunity to extend its lead late in the first half, but Tettleton halted a long drive with an interception deep in EMU territory.
EMU tied the game up at 21-21 midway through the third quarter when Benz tossed a 62-yard touchdown pass to Russell.
Ohio's offense struck big with 4:58 left in the third quarter, regaining the advantage following an 80-yard touchdown pass from Tettleton to Cochran. The Bobcats scored again less than three minutes later when Tettleton tossed a three-yard touchdown to Foster.
The Bobcats continued to pull away with 19 seconds left in the third quarter when Blankenship ripped off a 22-yard touchdown run.
EMU scored its final touchdown early in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard rush by Hill. Ohio closed out the blowout with two more scores, a six-yard rushing touchdown by Ryan Boykin and a one-yard rushing score by Travis Carrie.
Ohio's 56 points marked the most in head coach Frank Solich's nine-year tenure.
