Denton, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandin Byrd rushed for a career-high 202 yards and two touchdowns on just 18 carries as the North Texas Mean Green took down the Texas-El Paso Miners, 41-7, in a Conference-USA battle at Apogee Stadium.
Derek Thompson threw for 154 yards and a touchdown on 10-of-24 passing for the Mean Green (7-3,5-1 C-USA), who have won five-straight. Drew Miller caught three passes for 44 yards to lead North Texas.
For the Miners (1-8,0-5), Mack Leftwich finished with 128 yards passing, with a touchdown and an interception, on 14-of-20 passing. Leslie Jordan added five catches for 41 yards and a score. The Miners have lost six-straight.
The first half was dominated by the Mean Green. Byrd opened the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. Then the North Texas special teams came up big with a blocked punt was recovered in the end zone to give the home team a 14-0 lead in the closing seconds of the first quarter. Antoinne Jimmerson scored on a five-yard run early in the second period and the Mean Green were able to take a 21-0 lead into halftime.
The Mean Green picked up where they left off in the first half with a big play by the offense. Byrd scored his second touchdown on the day with an 82-yard touchdown run early in the third frame. The Miners finally got on the scoreboard as Leftwich connected with Leslie for a 22-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter.
North Texas extended its lead to 35-7 as Thompson hooked up with Carlos Harris for a 42-yard scoring pass with just under a minute gone in the fourth quarter. The Mean Green would add field goals from 31 and 25 yards out, respectively, to finish the game,
The Mean Green defense tied the school-record for sacks with eight and allowed a season-low 184 yards total offense. North Texas piled up 317 yards on the ground and 471 total yards for the game.
