The Citadel's Douglas to have knee surgery

Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel's All-Southern Conference defensive tackle Derek Douglas has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will have upcoming surgery.

Douglas, a redshirt junior who was injured during spring practice last Saturday, will have the surgery in about four weeks and miss fall camp and the beginning of the 2012 season, according to a university release.

Douglas was the Bulldogs' defensive MVP last season and made the All-SoCon first team. He had 43 tackles, third among the team's returning players, and 14.5 tackles for loss, the fifth-best total in the conference.

The Citadel coach Kevin Higgins said the usual rehab time for an injury of this sort could put Douglas on schedule to return in late September.
