Final Score: North Carolina 42, East Carolina 17

Chapel Hill, NC (Sports Network) - Shaun Draughn ran for 137 yards and three touchdowns as the North Carolina Tar Heels defeated the East Carolina Pirates, 42-17, in non-conference action at Kenan Memorial Stadium.

Draughn carried the ball 27 times for the Tar Heels (2-2), while Johnny White added a game-high 140 yards on 16 attempts in the team's second straight victory. Quarterback T.J. Yates hit on 18-of-26 passes for 181 yards and a couple of scores as well.

The Pirates (2-2) were paced by Dominique Davis who completed 33-of-51 passes for 244 yards and a score, but he was also picked off three times in the setback. Lance Lewis caught nine balls for 68 yards and a touchdown in the team's second consecutive defeat.

Lewis and Davis combined on a 13-yard TD pass play at the 6:19 mark of the first quarter to kick off the game's scoring and give ECU a 7-0 edge.

Four minutes later UNC responded when Yates connected with Jheranie Boyd on a 25-yard scoring pass to cap an eight-play, 77-yard drive to knot the score at 7-7.

Just six seconds into the second frame, Dwayne Harris stepped up and hit Joe Womack with a 39-yard TD strike for the Pirates to make the score 14-7 in favor of the visitors.

The North Carolina defense made an appearance late in the first half as Da'Norris Searcy returned an interception 46 yards for a score, making it 14-14 at the break.

Mike Barbour's 28-yard field goal at the 9:31 mark of the third quarter accounted for the final points of the game for the Pirates, giving the visitors a brief lead at 17-14.

From there the game belonged to UNC which scored 28 unanswered points to close out the contest. The stretch began with a 13-yard TD pass from Yates to Dwight Jones in the third and continued with a one-yard scoring run by Draughn late in the period to make the score 28-17.

Draughn's scoring runs of four and 13 yards in the fourth quarter put a cap on a game that was never in doubt in the second half.

North Carolina finished the day with 263 yards on the ground, compared to just 64 yards for a Pirates quad that controlled the ball for less than three minutes in the fourth quarter and barely eight minutes in the second half altogether.
