NCAA Game Summary - Marshall at Virginia Tech

Blacksburg, VA (Sports Network) - Tyrod Taylor threw for 161 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, and also added 58 yards on the ground to lead No. 14 Virginia Tech past Marshall, 52-10.
Ryan Williams totaled 164 yards and three scores on 16 carries for the Hokies (1-1), who were coming off a 34-24 setback to Alabama last weekend. David Wilson finished with 165 yards and a TD on 12 touches, while Danny Coale had a 43-yard catch in the win. Dyrell Roberts and Xavier Boyce had a TD reception each.
"Last week was the first game and we were shaky at times," Williams said. "I don't think a lot of guys played as fast as we needed to. This week, we had to prove to ourselves that we were that team and that we could put up points."
Brian Anderson threw for 116 yards on 15-of-31 efficiency for the Thundering Herd (1-1), who were coming off a nailbiting 31-28 victory against Southern Illinois last weekend. Darius Marshall tallied 109 yards and a score on 17 carries in the setback.
Williams' 57-yard touchdown run gave the Hokies a 7-0 lead with 4:18 left in the first quarter.
Marshall was stopped on its next touch, and VT went 64 yards in eight plays to make it 14-0. Williams ran in a four-yard score to cap the drive 54 ticks into the second stanza.
The Herd was held to a three-and-out on the ensuing drive and Jayron Hosley returned the punt 64 yards to balloon the difference to 21-0.
Marshall answered with a 61-yard TD dash on Marshall's next touch to close it to 21-7 with 10:32 showing on the clock.
Williams ran for a 28-yard score and Taylor hit Roberts for a 21-yard TD strike to make it 35-7 heading to the intermission.
Boyce had an eight-yard TD grab and Matt Waldron connected on a 28-yard field goal to make it 45-7 after three quarters.
Craig Ratanamorn hit a 29-yard field goal but Wilson responded with a 36-yard TD dash to account for the final margin.
The Hokies outgained the Herd, 605-252...VT had more first downs, 26-10...Virginia Tech holds an 8-2 advantage in the all-time series with Marshall, including a 41-14 thrashing of the Herd in the previous meeting back in 2005.
