NCAA Game Summary - Pittsburgh at Connecticut

East Hartford, CT (Sports Network) - Lyle McCombs ran for 120 yards and a
score on 29 carries as Connecticut took a 24-17 win over Pittsburgh in Big
East play.
Chandler Whitmer went 19-for-25 with 213 yards, one touchdown and one
interception while Ryan Griffin had six catches for 84 yards and a score for
the Huskies (4-6, 1-4 Big East), who got their first conference win and
snapped a four-game losing streak.
Tino Sunseri passed for 302 yards and two touchdowns on 19-of-34 attempts
while Drew Carswell and Mike Shanahan each caught a touchdown for the Panthers
(4-6, 1-4), who have dropped their past two games.
The Huskies opened the game with the ball and ran 11 plays over 6 1/2 minutes
to get into the end zone. Griffin, who earlier in the drive had caught a 23-
yard pass that saw him hurdle over a defender, grabbed a 2-yard score for a
7-0 lead.
Following a three-and-out from Pitt, UConn got the ball back at its own 27 and
moved 61 yards over 12 plays, capped by a 29-yard field goal from Chad
Christen with 1:43 left in the first for a 10-0 lead.
The Panthers got into scoring position and tried a 44-yard field goal early in
the second, but Kevin Harper missed.
The Huskies quickly punted, as did the Panthers, but Nick Williams fielded the
punt at his own 20 then raced down the left sideline on an 80-yard score for a
17-0 lead.
McCombs' 2-yard touchdown run with 1:02 left in the first half staked the
Huskies to a 24-0 lead. The drive covered 61 yards over six plays and was
highlighted by a 22-yard catch by Griffin.
Pitt got a 42-yard field goal from Harper to open the second half to get on
the board.
In a drive that spanned the third and fourth quarters, Sunseri capped it with
an 11-yard strike to Carswell for a 24-10 game with 13:37 to play.
Shanahan caught an 18-yard score with 2:46 to play to make it a one-score
game, but UConn was able to get the first downs it needed and ran out the
clock.
