NCAA Game Summary - Virginia Tech at Boston College

(Saturday, November 2)

Final Score: Boston College 34, Virginia Tech 27

Chestnut Hill, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Andre Williams ran for 166 yards and two touchdowns, as the Boston College Eagles claimed a 34-27 win over the Virginia Tech Hokies in Atlantic Coast Conference play at Alumni Stadium.

Williams carried the ball 33 times and accounted for more than half of his team's 289 yards from scrimmage. Chase Rettig completed 11-of-14 passes for 93 yards and a score to help the Eagles (6-3, 3-2 ACC) end a two-game slide.

Logan Thomas threw for 391 yards and two TDs for the previously nationally- ranked Hokies (4-4, 2-3), who have now dropped two in a row since having a six-game winning streak halted against Duke last week. Thomas had four turnovers (two interceptions, two fumbles lost) that led to 17 points for the opposition. Joshua Stanford finished with 171 yards on six catches for the visitors.

Boston College opened the scoring with a 19-yard touchdown scamper by Williams with 1:25 to play in the first quarter.

The second quarter belonged to Virginia Tech. The Hokies tied the score on Trey Edmunds' one-yard touchdown plunge at the 5:15 mark, and they took a 10-7 lead on Cody Journell's 56-yard field goal just before halftime.

BC's Nate Freese kicked a 24-yarder to make it a 10-10 game with 10:27 to play in the third quarter.

Virginia Tech answered with an eight-play, 82-yard drive, capped by Thomas' one-yard touchdown pass to Kalvin Cline.

But the Eagles once again responded, as Rettig found Jake Sinkovec for a two-yard TD pass to tie the score at 17 apiece with 1:20 remaining in the third quarter.

The Hokies went back on top, 20-17, on a 47-yard field goal by Journell early in the fourth.

However, BC began to take control from there. Freese knotted things up with a 43-yard field goal at the 8:45 mark, and on the third play of the ensuing series Thomas was intercepted by Kevin Pierre-Louis, who returned it 33 yards the other way for another Eagles touchdown.

The Hokies' next possession resulted in a turnover on downs, and on BC's next offensive play Williams broke free for a 62-yard TD scamper to make it a 34-20 game with 4:35 to play in regulation.

Virginia Tech would not go quietly, as Thomas connected with Edmunds for a 22- yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 34-27 with just under three minutes remaining. But after the Hokies defense forced a three and out, Thomas lost a fumble with just under a minute and a half to play.

Ultimately, the four Thomas turnovers proved costly, as Tech lost despite piling up 446 yards of total offense.
