GAME NOTES: The regular season comes to a close on Saturday night for a couple of Atlantic 10 Conference teams, as the Charlotte 49ers play host to the Saint Joseph's Hawks at Halton Arena.
Saint Joseph's has picked up wins in three of its last four contests. Most recently, the Hawks cruised past Rhode Island on Wednesday, 81-44.
Meanwhile, Charlotte rallied back from a huge second-half deficit to beat Duquesne in overtime on Wednesday, 89-87. The victory snapped the 49ers' four- game slide ever since recording a road win over then 10th-ranked Butler last month.
St. Joe's leads the all-time series, 7-4. These teams met in last year's final regular-season game, and the Hawks pulled out a 71-70 road win to earn the final spot in the A-10 Tournament.
The Hawks shot a healthy 53 percent from the floor in Wednesday's victory, while they held Rhode Island to a paltry 29 percent. C.J. Aiken returned to the lineup after missing the previous game with wrist and back injuries, and he showed no signs of rust in scoring 10 of his team-high 15 points in the first half. Teammate Ronald Roberts, Jr. chipped in with 13 points and 11 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the season. The Hawks used a 14-0 run late in the first half to create some separation, and the eventual 37-point victory represented their largest margin of the season. Four players are averaging double figures for SJU this season, led by Carl Jones with 14.3 ppg and Langston Galloway with 13.3 ppg. Those two have accounted for 60 percent of the team's 3-pointers on the year. Roberts (11.7 ppg, 8.5 rpg) and Aiken (11.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg) are more active near the rim.
Charlotte has struggled since leading scorer DeMario Mayfield (11.7 ppg) was suspended indefinitely on Jan. 30 and later kicked off the team on Feb. 22 for disciplinary reasons. Mayfield, a transfer from Georgia, had scored in double figures in 14 of his 18 games played this season and 33 for his career. His absence has left senior forward Chris Braswell (11.6 ppg, 5.4 rpg) as the only double-digit scorer on the roster. Braswell's season-high 28 points were instrumental in helping the 49ers overcome a 17-point deficit at Duquesne earlier this week. In fact, 24 of those 28 points came in the second half and overtime. Terrence Williams added 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Pieria Henry also notched a double-double with 18 points and 10 boards.
A win for the 49ers would be their 20th of the season and would also even their A-10 record at 8-8. They'll need to defend along the perimeter, but they should be able to carry the momentum from Wednesday's victory into this final home game.
