GAME NOTES: The streaking Purdue Boilermakers host the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Saturday in a non-conference matchup at Mackey Arena.
Purdue is coming off a strong 88-67 win over Boston College at Mackey Arena on Wednesday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Terone Johnson scored a season-high 18 points and Ronnie Johnson added 15 points for the Boilermakers, who have won two in a row. Purdue used an 8-0 run midway through the first half to build a 16-point lead and take control. The Boilermakers shot 52.2 percent from the field for the game, improving to 7-2 for the season.
The Johnson tandem of Terone and Ronnie leads the Boilermakers in scoring this season. Terone, a senior, averages a team-best 13.2 points, while his sophomore brother, Ronnie, is on his heels with 13 points per game. Ronnie shoots 50 percent from 3-point range and 46.5 percent from the field. Terone is hitting treys at a 34.6 percent clip and shooting 45.7 percent from the field. Outside of the Johnsons, nobody else on the Boilermakers is averaging double figures.
Eastern Michigan enters this contest with a two-game losing streak in tow. Last time out the Eagles fell to nationally-ranked UMass, 69-57.
The Eagles held a 35-31 halftime lead against the Minutemen, shooting a blistering 57.7 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes. However, things changed in the second half and Eastern Michigan could only muster 8- of-32 shooting in the final 20 minutes. Karrington Ward and Daylen Harrison each scored 11 points to lead the Eagles in defeat.
The outing prior, Eastern Michigan fell to nationally ranked Kentucky, 81-63.
Ward leads the Eagles in scoring with 15.3 points per game, while Raven Lee adds 13.4 points per contest. Glenn Bryant tallies 10.2 points per game to round out the double-figure scorers for Eastern Michigan, which as a team shoots 45.4 percent from the field and averages 73.7 points per game.
Even though Purdue has won three of the four all-time meetings between the two schools, it was Eastern Michigan that came away with a 47-44 win in a defensive battle last time these two teams met on Dec. 8, 2012.
The Eagles will continue to be a tough opponent for the Boilermakers, but expect the homecourt and Purdue's strong play of late to be enough.
