GAME NOTES: The Nebraska Cornhuskers close out their non-conference home schedule when they host the Citadel Bulldogs at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
The Huskers come into tonight's contest having won three of their last four contests overall. Last time they took the floor, the Huskers downed Arkansas State 79-67. With the win, Nebraska moved to 7-3 on the year.
The Citadel ended a four-game losing streak with a 79-68 win over Brevard on Wednesday night. Wins have been hard to come by for the Bulldogs, who are just 4-8 on the young season.
Sophomore Shavon Shields led four Huskers in double figures with 15 points, as the team used a 15-0 run to highlight a 50-point first half, helping build a 23-point halftime lead against Arkansas State. The Huskers led by as many as 28 points in the second half before coasting to the 12-point win to improve to 6-0 at home this season. Nebraska dished out a season-high 19 assists - the most in head coach Tim Miles two seasons at Nebraska, which also received a strong performance from sophomore Walter Pitchford, who had 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Terran Petteway leads Nebraska in scoring, tallying 15.8 points per game. Shields is a close second, averaging 13.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per outing. As a team, the Cornhuskers shoot 44.2 percent from the field and average 73 points per game.
Marshall Harris scored a game-high 22 points and Matt Van Scyoc added 21 points for the Bulldogs, who improved to 4-1 at home this season with Wednesday's victory. Brian White added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Citadel, which enters this contest looking for its first win on the road.
The Citadel is averaging 72.7 points per game, but is allowing opponents to score 75.6 points per contest. White, a 6-foot-6 forward, averages 15 points and 7.3 rebounds per game and is shooting 58 percent from the floor and 83 percent from the line. Van Scyoc, a 6-foot-6 sophomore guard/forward is averaging a team-high 15.1 points per game. He has a team-high 23 3-pointers and is shooting 90 percent from the foul line.
Even though Nebraska leads the all-time series, 3-0, this will be the first meeting between the two programs in 20 years. The teams met for three straight years from 1990 until 1992 with Nebraska winning all three games by double figures. The Huskers are 2-0 all-time against The Citadel in Lincoln and 9-3 all-time against the current members of the Southern Conference. A win here would give the Huskers their first unbeaten home non-conference slate since the 2010-11 season.
