GAME NOTES: A pair of 6-2 teams take the court at Reed Arena, as the Houston Cougars take on the Texas A&M Aggies in a Lone Star State matchup this evening.
After winning their first six games, the Aggies enters tonight's contest riding a two-game losing streak. Texas A&M lost to SMU 55-52 on Saturday in the 2013 Corpus Christi Challenge.
Freshman Davonte Fitzgerald, making his first collegiate start, led the Aggies with 12 points, while J-Mychal Reese had 11 points and Kourtney Roberson grabbed a game-high 10 boards. The Aggies struggled for most of the contest, ending the game shooting a season-worst 35 percent from the floor. As a result, they also scored a season-low in points.
For the season, Roberson leads the Aggies in points and rebounds, scoring 14 points and grabbing 8.2 boards per game. Alex Caruso adds 10.8 points and Jamal Jones contributes 10.3 points per game for Texas A&M, which as a team averages just over 75 points per game.
Houston, meanwhile, is coming off a 78-67 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday. TaShawn Thomas led the way with 14 points to help the Cougars end a two-game slide and win for the sixth time in eight contests. Jherrod Stiggers, Danrad Knowles and L.J. Rose all added 13 points for Houston, which used a 13-5 run midway through the second half to take control.
Knowles hit a pair of free throws to cap off the surge, giving the Cougars a 56-50 lead, and Houston eventually increased the advantage to double figures, 63-53, with 6:41 left on back-to-back dunks by Thomas and Knowles. Houston cruised to the finish from there.
Thomas leads the Cougars in scoring this season, averaging 17.3 points per game, and in rebounds with 10.3 per contest. Danuel House is second on the squad in scoring with a 15.6 ppg average, as Houston averages nearly 76 points per game. Rose rounds out the double-figure scorers with 12.4 per contest and added just over five assists per game.
These two schools used to do battle in the old Southwest Conference and as a result Houston owns a 53-31 lead in the all-time series. However, Texas A&M has won the last two meetings, including defeating the Cougars 70-58 on the road a year ago. The Aggies also hold a 21-14 lead in the series at home, last losing to Houston in College Station in the 1995-96 campaign. Houston has a shot at ending that slump tonight.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Houston 82, Texas A&M 78.
