GAME NOTES: In a matchup between two teams at opposite ends of the Southern Conference, the College of Charleston Cougars will play host to the Wofford Terriers at the TD Arena on Thursday night.
The Terriers are coming off a 53-47 win over Georgia Southern. It was the second win in a row for Wofford coming after a two-game slump. This will be the second of a two-game road swing for the Terriers before heading back to Spartanburg to host the Citadel in their regular season closer. Wofford's recent surge may be a case of too little, too late, as the team is just 6-10 in league play, good for just fourth place in the South Division of the conference.
Charleston most recently suffered a 55-52 loss to Gardner-Webb in a BracketBusters matchup. The loss was the second in the last four games for the Cougars after a six-game win streak. This will be the final home game of the season for Charleston before heading to Furman for the regular season closer. The Cougars had very little chance of earning a divisional title, as Davidson ran away with it this year with a stellar 16-1 league mark. Still, CofC is an impressive 12-4 in the SoCon and looks to finish strong.
Wofford leads the all-time series 76-54 but it was Charleston who handled the Terriers just over a month ago, handing them a harsh 79-50 loss.
In the win over Georgia Southern, Karl Cochran supplied 16 points for the Terriers while Lee Skinner added 11 points and nine rebounds. Spencer Collins played a huge role in the victory as well, recording a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Cochran leads the team with 15.7 ppg, while Collins (12.5 ppg) and Skinner (10.1 ppg) have made solid contributions as well. The three are the only Wofford players averaging in double figures this season, while Skinner leads the team with 7.2 rpg. The Terriers struggle offensively overall, putting up just 58.5 ppg (333rd in nation), but are a force on the defensive end, allowing just 59.1 ppg (25th in nation).
In the loss to Gardner-Webb, Andrew Lawrence scored 16 points, with four 3- pointers for Charleston and was the only Cougar to score in double figures. Anthony Stitt added eight points and five assists, shooting just 3-of-12 from the floor in his 37 minutes on the court.
Lawrence is the top scorer for the Cougars this season with 13.3 ppg. Stitt is the only other Charleston player averaging in double figures with 10.8 ppg, while Adheji Baru averages 9.9 ppg with 8.5 rpg and shoots over 50.0 percent from the field, giving the team an inside presence. The Cougars play very solid defense and hold opponents to just 40.7 percent shooting from the field and 61.9 ppg.
Wofford plays great defense but is unable to capitalize on it as the Terriers struggle at the other end. While the Cougars are not overwhelmingly tough at home, the Terriers once again haven't proved themselves on the road (3-14).
