GAME NOTES: The College of Charleston Cougars will try and get back on track when they host the Eagles of Georgia Southern in a Southern Conference showdown at TD Arena.
These teams met up on Jan. 17 in Statesboro, Georgia, where the Eagles claimed a 51-47 victory. The teams combined for only 33 points at halftime, and Charleston's 47 points for the game marked a season-low. Still, CofC leads the all-time series, 27-19.
Charleston saw its season-best, six-game winning streak come to a halt against Davidson Thursday night in a 75-59 rout. The Cougars have gone an impressive 9-2 on the road this season, but Thursday's loss dropped their home record to 9-6. Following this tilt, they'll visit Western Carolina on Wednesday.
On the other side of the floor, GSU rebounded from a two-game slide with a lopsided 78-57 road win over The Citadel on Thursday. The Eagles will conclude the home portion of their schedule with a pair of games next week against Wofford and Furman.
GSU ran Citadel out of the building with a 52.7-percent shooting effort from the floor, and that included 12-of-22 accuracy (.545) from beyond the arc. Freshman Cleon Roberts led all scorers with 20 points, which matched a career- high. Eric Ferguson added 14 points off the bench, while Brian Holmes scored 11, and C.J. Reed finished with 10 points. Defensively, the Eagles held the Citadel to 39.6-percent shooting from the floor and 3-of-16 from the perimeter. Ferguson leads the team in scoring (14.3 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg), as Thursday's game was only the second time this season he was not in the starting lineup. Reed is also averaging double figures with 12.8 ppg behind a team-high 49 3-pointers (.355). He is 12 points away from 2,000 for his career and has averaged 17.6 points over his last five outings.
Charleston is a guard-oriented squad headlined by the tandem of Andrew Lawrence (13.5 ppg) and Anthony Stitt (10.8 ppg). Those two have combined to knock down 89 3-pointers on a collective 39-percent efficiency for the season. While Lawrence and Stitt must be accounted for along the perimeter, CofC has proven it can bang around with bigger teams on the blocks. Down low, Adjehi Baru (9.8 ppg, 8.5 rpg) is one of four Cougars averaging at least 4.7 rebounds. As a team, the Cougars are +5.3 in rebounding margin. But after cruising along with six straight wins, they came back down to Earth against Davidson a couple of nights ago. The Wildcats led by only two at the half, although they put the game away by shooting 59.3 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes. Lawrence and Trent Wiedeman shared team-high scoring honors with 10 points apiece in the loss.
The Cougars put up a dud their last time out, although they figure to come out hungry, especially after losing the first meeting with the Eagles this season.
