GAME NOTES: The Georgia State Panthers are set to host the struggling Monarchs of Old Dominion in a Colonial Athletic Association bout at GSU Sports Arena.
It has been a brutally long season for Old Dominion, as the team boasts only two victories and is currently mired in an eight-game slide. The Monarchs are coming off a tough, 68-66 setback to Towson on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, Georgia State has gotten hot of late with wins in five of its last six outings. The Panthers were also in action Wednesday night, as they became the first CAA team to beat first-place Northeastern this season.
GSU claimed a 69-54 road win over the Monarchs two weekends ago. Still, the Monarchs have dominated the all-time series, 15-3.
The Monarchs trailed Towson by as many as 16 in the first half, and they went into halftime facing a 40-26 deficit. However, they held Towson scoreless for the first six minutes of the second half and eventually took a 43-42 lead on Aaron Bacote's layup at the 11:28 mark. But the Tigers were not done battling, as they answered right back with an 8-0 and later went on an 8-2 spurt to regain control. Towson's 49-34 rebounding advantage, which included a 22-14 edge on the offensive glass, proved to be a key factor in the outcome. DeShawn Painter paced ODU with 20 points and nine rebounds in the loss. Richard Ross chipped in with 13 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks, while Dimitri Batten added 15 points off the bench. On the season, Painter leads the team with 11.6 points and 8.0 rebounds per contest, although he is the only player averaging double figures. As a team, the Monarchs are shooting just 38.8 percent from the floor.
Georgia State boasts three double-digit scorers who have started every game this season together. Leading scorer R.J. Hunter (16.4 ppg) is averaging a team-best 2.1 3-pointers per game and is also collecting 5.5 rebounds. Devonta White is next in line with 14.1 ppg, followed by Manny Atkins with 13.8 ppg. Like Hunter, Atkins can step outside and crash the boards, as he is shooting at a 41.5-percent clip from the perimeter (39-of-94) while averaging a team- best 6.2 rebounds. On Wednesday night, they trailed CAA-leading Northeastern by 11 late in the first half. However, the Panthers dialed up the defense in the second stanza, as they held NU to 8-of-21 shooting from the floor (.381) and went up by as many as 12. Hunter led all scorers with 27 points behind a 5-of-11 effort from the perimeter. White and Rashaad Richardson added 13 points apiece, while Atkins finished with 12.
GSU won by 15 on the road when these teams met up two weeks ago. If anything, the Panthers have stepped up their game since then, and they should be able to win this one rather handily at home.
