GAME NOTES: The rejuvenated Old Dominion Monarchs look to keep the ball rolling as they visit the Bob Carpenter Center for a Colonial Athletic Association matchup with the Delaware Blue Hens.
Old Dominion leads the all-time series with Blue Hens, 15-7, but Delaware snapped a three-game skid to the Monarchs with an 84-72 victory in Norfolk on Jan. 5.
Since Jim Corrigan was promoted to interim head coach, ODU has picked up a 12- point road victory at Drexel and lost to the conference-leading Northeastern Huskies in overtime. The Monarchs hit 8-of-16 from beyond the arc against the Dragons before an ice cold 1-of-26 showing from long distance against the Huskies. DeShawn Painter made a game-tying basket with two seconds left on his way to a 15-point, 16-rebound double-double in a loss that dropped the team's record to 3-21. The former NC State center paces ODU with 12.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per tilt.
The Monarchs have managed to shoot above 40 percent from the floor over their past three games after failing to do so in their previous eight. The poor overall performance this season has put ODU eighth in the CAA in scoring at 63.0 ppg, and last in scoring defense with 70.5 points allowed. No other Monarch posts a double-digit scoring average other than Painter, but Dimitri Batten (9.3 ppg), Keenan Palmore (8.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg), and Donte Hill (8.0 ppg, 3.1 apg, 1.9 spg) have all shown promise. Batten tallied 25 points in the team's overtime setback to the Huskies.
Delaware picked up its fourth win in five games on Saturday on the road with a 79-72 decision over George Mason. The victory improved the Blue Hens to 12-12 overall and a third-place CAA standing. Devon Saddler had a game-high 22 points and Jarvis Threatt registered his first career double-double with 20 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in the team's win over the Patriots. Forwards Josh Brinkley and Carl Baptiste each tied their season-highs during the win at George Mason. Brinkley scored 17 points, going 6-of-7 from the field and 5-of-6 from the foul line. Baptiste finished with nine points, as he went 3-of-5 from the floor and hit all three of his free-throw attempts.
Saddler is leading the conference in scoring at 19.4 ppg, while Threatt and Jamelle Hagins net 12.2 ppg apiece. Hagins is second in the CAA on the boards with 10.4 per tilt. The trio has helped Delaware register the league's second-best scoring offense (68.5 ppg).
The Monarchs' recent surge may not be enough to lift them over Delaware, but there is no doubt they will come out and provide a challenge for the Blue Hens. If Painter continues to get help from his teammates, an upset is possible for ODU.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Delaware 76, Old Dominion 68
