GAME NOTES: One of three teams in the Missouri Valley Conference already with double-digit wins, the Bradley Braves try to keep the Indiana State Sycamores from reaching that plateau on Wednesday night as the teams clash at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute.
Trailing only Creighton and Wichita State for the best record among MVC programs, Bradley just bowed to the Shockers at home three days ago in a 69-63 final. The loss snapped a brief two-game win streak for a squad, which put together an 8-2 mark out of the gates against some lesser-known opponents.
As for the Sycamores, a squad which has won four of five home dates this season, they too just suited up against one of the power teams from the conference in Creighton, falling to the nationally-ranked Bluejays by a score of 79-66 last Saturday. The defeat snapped a three-game win streak for the squad and dropped it to 2-1 in league play, which is where Bradley is at the moment as well.
Bradley leads the series against the Sycamores by a count of 48-29, but in games played at Indiana State the host owns a 19-17 mark.
On Sunday afternoon at Carver Arena, Bradley had four starters score in double figures, but still that wasn't enough as the team suffered the six-point setback against visiting Wichita State. Dyricus Simms-Edwards and Walt Lemon both tallied 15 points and handed out five assists, the latter adding eight rebounds, while Jake Eastman and Tyshon Pickett registered 11 and 10 points, respectively, in a game that featured 10 ties and 12 lead changes. Although he is shooting just 26.5 percent behind the 3-point line, Lemon is still a vital part of the Bradley offense with both his 13.8 ppg and his 53 assists which is tied with Simms-Edwards (11.2 ppg) for the team lead. Pickett (11.5 ppg) is one of the guys who handles the action in the paint with 6.5 rpg and will probably be asked to do even more with Will Egolf (8.6 ppg, 5.8 rpg) being suspended indefinitely.
The Sycamores went from shooting a mere 31.0 percent from the floor in the first half and a 27-27 tie at the break against Creighton to 59.1 percent accuracy over the final 20 minutes and an unexpected double-digit loss. Jake Odum and Manny Arop both tallied 13 points for the visitors, while Justin Gant tacked on 12 points as the team finished the meeting with 7-of-14 shooting beyond the arc, and still a tally in the loss column. Odum, never one to shy away from taking a shot from anywhere on the floor, is converting 47.4 percent of his attempts for his 14.6 ppg, but at the same time he is also the one responsible for putting his teammates in scoring situations with his 61 assists. Arop (12.8 ppg) is the other double-digit scorer who would be wise to focus more on his interior efforts (5.6 rpg) than his 3-point shooting (.296).
Bradley has piled up a considerable number of wins against weaker foes thus far, so the team's inflated record might be considered somewhat sketchy. The loss of Egolf also hurts the team's chances in this meeting with ISU.
