GAME NOTES: The UAB Blazers go for the season series sweep of the Marshall Thundering Herd when the two clash on Saturday for a Conference USA bout at the Cam Henderson Center.
UAB enters Saturdays tilt after a 80-57 victory versus Rice last Saturday. The victory was the third in four games for Jerod Haase's squad, which has arrived at a 12-14 overall record as a result. The Blazers' success has come mostly in Birmingham, as they enter Saturday with a 2-9 record in true road games.
Tom Herrion's Thundering Herd completed a season series sweep of UCF on Wednesday with an 82-70 win over the Knights in Orlando. The decision was the first on the road for Marshall, which rose to 12-15 with the win. The Herd now return to the Cam Henderson Center where they are 10-4 on the campaign.
This will be the 19th meeting in history between these schools on the hardwood. The Blazers coasted to a 75-61 triumph on Feb. 9 in the first segment of the 2012-13 season series to extend their all-time series lead to 12-6.
In the victory over the Owls, UAB shot an even 50 percent from the floor, making 30-of-60 shots, as Preston Purifoy and Jordan Swing each tied for the team-lead with 19 points apiece. Purifoy was nearly perfect from the field, making 7-of-8 shots, including 4- of-5 from 3-point range. Swing is pacing UAB in the scoring column with 13.8 ppg. Rod Rucker is next in line with 13.7 ppg which he accompanies with a team-high 8.2 boards per outing as well. Quincy Taylor is pacing the C-USA in conference action with a 47.3 percent efficiency rating from beyond the arc. The Blazers are fifth in the C-USA in team scoring with an average of 72.9 ppg, but they are second to last on the defensive end, where they give up 71.9 ppg. The steady scoring has come through unselfish team play that yields 16.5 assists per outing.
Elijah Pittman led a balanced attack for the Herd in their victory over UCF with 20 points. Dennis Tinnon recorded a double-double off the bench with 14 points and 15 rebounds, D.D. Scarver netted 16 points, and DeAndre Kane finished with 19 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Tinnon, who grabs 9.4 rpg, has now notched double-doubles in consecutive games for the first time this season. Pittman paces the team with 15.5 ppg, while Kane posts 14.6 points and a C-USA leading 7.2 assists per tilt. Marshall scored 48 points in the first half to register its highest scoring output at halftime since Dec. 21, 2011 versus WVU Tech. The Thundering Herd are one of just two teams in the conference with a negative scoring margin as they are being out-produced by an average of 3.1 ppg.
The homecourt advantage has been very meaningful to both of these teams all season long. Although UAB dominated the first meeting, the Thundering Herd will put up a much better fight on their own floor.
