Final Score: Utah 81, BYU 64
Salt Lake City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Jordan Loveridge scored 21 points, adding six rebounds and five assists, as the Utah Runnin' Utes crushed the BYU Cougars, 81-64, in the latest installment in the Desert Duel.
Also scoring in double figures for Utah (9-1) were Delon Wright and Dallin Bachynski with 16 and 11 points, respectively, the latter also pulling down eight rebounds in just 19 minutes of action as the team won for the third time in as many games. Wright helped out with six rebounds and a game-high seven assists as well.
The Cougars (8-4), losers of two of the last three, were paced by Tyler Haws with 14 points, but the star guard shot only 3-of-11 from the floor. Kyle Collinsworth and Eric Mika pitched in with 12 points apiece, the latter also clearing 10 rebounds. Matt Carlino struggled with a mere 3-of-15 shooting from the field.
Utah led by as many as 18 in the first half, even as the team shot only 42.1 percent from the floor and 6-of-18 behind the 3-point line in the frame. Luckily for the hosts, BYU suffered with only 31.4 percent accuracy from the field through the first 20 minutes, not to mention a disappointing 5-of-12 showing at the free-throw line, allowing the Utes to claim a 42-29 advantage at the break.
In the second half there was very little improvement for the Cougars who converted 34.5 percent from the floor, leaving the Utes to run away with the lopsided victory.
BYU, which shot only 32.8 percent for the game, didn't do itself any favors with a mere 17-of-31 (.548) at the charity stripe.
