Final Score: Georgia 65, Western Carolina 63
Athens, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Charles Mann made two free throws with 2.5 seconds left in regulation, as the Georgia Bulldogs escaped with a 65-63 win over the Western Carolina Catamounts in a non-conference tilt at Stegeman Coliseum.
Kenny Gaines had a team-high 17 points to help the Bulldogs (6-4) to their fifth straight win. Mann added 13 points to go along with six assists, and Brandon Morris chipped in with 11 points off the bench.
Trey Sumler led all scorers with 21 points for the Catamounts (6-8), who struggled offensively just three days after breaking the school's single-game 3-point record with 20 threes in Wednesday's 92-84 win over Charleston Southern. Brandon Boggs rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points in a losing effort.
Georgia never led by more than three points in the contest. The Bulldogs battled to a 29-29 halftime tie despite shooting a solid 53 percent from the floor in the opening frame.
WCU scored the first eight points of the second stanza and continued to play frontrunner until Donte' Williams' dunk tied it at 58-58 with 2:09 remaining. Following a turnover on the other end, Georgia's Nemanja Djurisic buried a 3- pointer to give the Bulldogs a three-point cushion, and they never relinquished the lead the rest of the way.
The Catamounts were 9-of-22 from beyond the arc on the day, but they were also out-scored at the foul line, 24-8.
