Providence, RI (Sports Network) - Bryce Cotton pumped in 25 points as the Providence Friars took down the Charlotte 49ers, 75-66, in the first round of the 2013 National Invitational Tournament at the Dunkin Donuts Center.

Vincent Council tallied 16 points and six assists for Providence (18-14), which advances to take on Robert Morris in the second round. Kris Dunn had a strong showing with 14 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals while LaDontae Henton filled up the stat sheet as well with 13 points, nine boards and three blocks.

E. Victor Nickerson paced Charlotte (21-12) with 14 points and seven rebounds while Chris Braswell and Terrence Williams both scored 12 points in the setback. Willie Clayton added 10 points and six rebounds.

The 49ers played very well in the early stages of the contest and took a 36-33 lead into halftime after they converted 11-of-12 at the free-throw line. Providence went into the break trailing by just a 3-pointer despite shooting only 36.4 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.

While Charlotte cooled off to hit on just 38.7 percent of its shots from the floor, the Friars heated up to sink 46.9 percent of their field goal tries. Providence overcame a seven-point deficit and led by as many as 10 in the final minute.

The Friars assisted 16 of their 27 makes from the floor and committed only five turnovers. Charlotte had 12 assists to the same number of miscues.
