Dimitri Batten rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 points off the bench.
The Tribe jumped out to a 12-point lead on a 3-pointer by Julian Boatner at the 7:25 mark of the first half, capping a 16-4 spurt. However, ODU answered right back with a 15-4 run, and the half eventually ended with W&M leading, 39-34.
After shooting 56.5 percent from the floor in the opening frame, the Tribe cooled off in the second stanza and shot just 35.7 percent. Still, they were able to put together a late 9-2 run to turn a 63-58 lead into a 72-60 cushion with less than a minute to play.
Although the Monarchs shot a healthy 50 percent from the floor for the game, they were 0-of-7 from the foul line while W&M made 18-of-22 free throws. In addition, Thornton outscored the whole ODU team from beyond the arc (6-of-22) in nine fewer attempts.
