Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Scott Suggs scored 19 points as the Washington Huskies held on for a 64-62 win over the Washington State Huskies in a thrilling matchup in the first round of the Pac-12 Conference Tournament at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
C.J. Wilcox added 11 points for the sixth-seeded Huskies (18-14), who will advance to play Oregon in the next round of the tourney. Shawn Kemp, Jr. chipped in 10 points and Abdul Gaddy finished with nine points and 11 assists. The win was the fourth in five games for the Huskies.
Brock Motum paced Washington State (13-19) with 28 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the field while D.J. Shelton chimed in with 19 points and five rebounds. Royce Wooldridge went 5-of-10 from the field en route to 12 points in the Cougars' loss, which snapped a two-game winning streak.
The Huskies were in complete control early on as they hit on 46.2 percent of their field goal tries including 5-of-11 from beyond the arc en route to a 36-25 lead at the intermission. Washington State went only 3-of-12 from 3- point range before the break.
Motum scored 14 points after halftime to spearhead the rally. The Cougars shot an even 50 percent from the field and connected on seven triples while Washington also made 50 percent of its field goal tries but shot a less effective 3-of-8 from 3-point distance. Washington led by as many as 19 in the second half before the Cougars came back to tie it up. Desmond Simmons made the go-ahead jumper for the Huskies with 1:16 left. Trailing by two points with the ball in the closing seconds, Washington State's last second chance was not utilized as Motum missed a triple just before the buzzer.
Washington enjoyed a 30-27 edge in the rebounding battle.
