Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) -
It happens in fantasy, just as it happens in the real world - it's the ups and downs of the human condition.
With the news that Magglio Ordonez (.273, two HRs, 22 RBIs in 57 games) is being benched by Manager Jim Leyland, comes an opportunity for another player to shine.
That player should be Tigers outfielder Marcus Thames.
Off a two home run game on Friday night, Thames is batting .333 for the month of June with five home runs in just 36 at-bats. He has now homered in two consecutive games and seems to be the man who will benefit the most from Ordonez's "sabbatical."
Thames has shown a lot of power over his six-year Tigers career, but also a ton of strikeouts. He has homered in one out of every 14.46 at-bats, but also struck out once every 3.59 at-bats . I would expect both trends to continue, but with Ordonez and Carlos Guillen (shoulder) out of the lineup, Detroit needs more punch in their offense and Thames is their best option.
Thames missed most of April and May with a strained ribcage. Because of the injury and the lack of playing time in the Tigers outfield, he is owned in under 10% of all fantasy leagues, so he won't cost you anything but a waiver pickup.
He's worth taking the small gamble, at least for the next few weeks, until Ordonez can find his hitting stroke.
