NCAA Game Summary - Utah State at Wisconsin
(Saturday, September 15th)
Final Score: Wisconsin 16, Utah State 14
Madison, WI (Sports Network) - Montee Ball ran for 139 yards and the game-
winning touchdown as the Wisconsin Badgers barely survived against the Utah
State Aggies, 16-14, in non-conference play at Camp Randall Stadium.
Ball carried the ball 37 times for Wisconsin (2-1), the team generating 156
yards on 45 total attempts in the triumph. Quarterbacks Danny O'Brien and Joel
Stave combined to hit on 7-of-16 passing for a mere 78 yards.
The Aggies (2-1) were paced by Chuckie Keeton who converted 18-of-34 passing
for 181 yards and two touchdowns, adding a team-high 75 yards rushing on 15
attempts as well.
USU scored the only points of the first quarter as Keeton hooked up with
Kerwynn Williams on a 39-yard TD pass play to give the visitors a 7-0
advantage.
Wisconsin cut into the deficit with a 19-yard field goal by Kyle French at the
14:16 mark of the second frame.
Before the half could draw to an end, USU took advantage of a short field as
Keeton and Matt Austin combined on an 11-yard TD pass play to give the Aggies
an impressive 14-3 edge at the break on the road.
Ball had a total of 19 carries for 59 yards in the first half for the Badgers.
The Wisconsin special teams made an appearance midway through the third frame
when Kenzel Doe returned a punt 82 yards for a touchdown to draw the hosts to
within four points.
The Badgers finally took the lead late in the third when Ball slipped to the
outside and into the end zone from 17 yards out to make the score 16-14.
However, the PAT was blocked, which left the hosts clinging to the two-point
edge.
With time running out, USU moved the ball down into the red zone, but an
offensive pass interference penalty pushed the Aggies back out of field goal
range. The visitors were able to again center the ball at the 19-yard line
with 11 seconds to play, but Josh Thompson missed his first field goal attempt
of the season as his kick from 37 yards out missed to the right.
