Final Score: Atlanta 1, Colorado 0
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Tim Hudson spun seven scoreless innings Thursday and the Atlanta Braves scored just one unearned run for the second consecutive day to take a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies in the finale of a four-game set at Turner Field.
Hudson (14-5) scattered six hits and walked two with two strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 8-1 over his last 12 starts. Peter Moylan and Eric O'Flaherty combined for a perfect eighth before Craig Kimbrel worked around a one-out single in the ninth to nail down his 34th save of the season.
Martin Prado and Jayson Heyward finished with two hits apiece, while Juan Francisco scored the game's only run for the Braves, who have won four of their last five contests.
"Good pitching is always good to have and I feel like we're just a bloop single away," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said of his club, which finished 3-for-35 with runners in scoring position during the series. "It's just a matter of breaking it open."
Charlie Blackmon registered four of Colorado's seven hits, as the Rockies lost for the third time in their last four games.
Jhoulys Chacin (2-5) was tagged with the loss after giving up an unearned run on seven hits and three walks over 3 1/3 innings.
"We got a lot of young guys out there right now playing and we got to learn from these mistakes," Rockies first baseman Jason Giambi said. "You got to kind of be careful in these tight games against good teams because you might not get an opportunity to beat them by making a few mistakes."
The lone run of the contest occurred on a mental lapse by Chacin in the bottom of the second inning.
Francisco started the frame with a bunt single down the third-base line to beat the shift and Dan Uggla followed with a ground-rule double into the right-field corner.
Chacin then threw an 0-2 fastball to Brian McCann that missed wide for a ball, but Chacin missed the throw back to the mound from Wilin Rosario and the ball trickled through the infield.
Francisco alertly broke from third and slid in safely at the plate to give the Braves a 1-0 advantage.
Hudson pitched out of his only jam in the third, as Dexter Fowler and Josh Rutledge stroked back-to-back singles before Jordan Pacheco's groundout put runners at second and third.
The right-hander then popped out Rosario and grounded out Tyler Colvin to end Colorado's only real threat of the day.
The last time a team won back-to-back games against the same team without scoring an earned run was July 27-28, 1984 when the Dodgers accomplished the feat against the Reds ... It was the first time in franchise history that the Braves won back-to-back 1-0 games with both runs being unearned ... The Rockies bullpen tossed 19 2/3 scoreless innings during this four-game set ... Pacheco went 0-for-2, snapping a 14-game hitting streak ... The Braves have won 18 of Hudson's 24 starts this season.
