Potter shoots 69 at Women's Mid-Am

Asheville, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Julia Potter carded a 2-under 69 on Saturday to grab a 5-stroke lead after the first round of stroke play at the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship.

Potter was the lone player in red figures. She started with back-to-back birdies from the 10th at Biltmore Forest Country Club. She parred 10 consecutive holes from the 12th.

At the fourth, Potter stumbled to a bogey, but she bounced back with a birdie on the sixth. Potter parred the final three holes to post 69.

Christina Proteau, who was a quarterfinalist last year, posted a 3-over 74 and is alone in second place.

Martha Leach, the 2009 winner, managed a 4-over 75 in round one. She was joined in third place by Rachel Smith, Olivia Herrick and Mercedes Huarte.

Meghan Stasi, who won this title for a fourth time last year, opened with a 5- over 76. She shares seventh place with Margaret Shirley, Dawn Woodard and Glynnis Price

Lauren Todd and Shannon Lutynski were one shot back at plus-6, while Caryn Wilson and Kate Hildahl started the championship with 78s.
