Horsfield cruises into Junior Am quarters
Truckee, CA (Sports Network) - Sam Horsfield picked up a pair of easy wins on Thursday and he advanced to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.
Horsfield is one of five quarterfinalists. The other three third-round matches were suspended due to darkness after a pair of weather delays.
The third-round matches will resume at 10 a.m. (ET) on Friday at Martis Camp Club. The quarterfinals are slated to start at 10:30 a.m.
Horsfield romped to an 8 & 7 win over Nick Hardy in round two, then cruised to a 6 & 5 win over Aaron Terrazas in the third round. Horsfield will take on John Augenstein in the quarters.
Augenstein won both of his matches 1-up on Thursday. His first match against stroke-play medalist Jim Liu lasted 20 holes.
China's Zecheng Dou won his two matches Thursday and will face Davis Riley on Friday. Riley easily beat Luis Gagne, 5 & 4 in round two, then fended off Trevor Phillips, 2 & 1, in round three.
Doug Ghim won both of his matches on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals. He will take on the winner of the Cameron Young vs. George Cunningham match. Those two were all square through 17 holes when play was called for the night.
The final two matches were all square when play stopped for the day. Justin Suh parred the 11th to even his match with Scottie Scheffler and they matched four pars in a row from the 12th before play ended for the day.
In the last match, Nick Heinen was battling P.J. Samiere in a tight bout. Neither player was more than 1-up and 10 of the first 14 holes in that match were halved.
